Sixteen years ago, at thirteen years old, I started building a galaxy. Not because I had a plan to publish it. Because I needed somewhere to go.

The Shadow Universe began on sheets of parchment paper borrowed from a kitchen drawer, in a bedroom, with a number 2 pencil. It was a place to exist when the world outside wasn't safe. Over sixteen years it became something else — a fully realized science fiction universe grounded in real physics, real xenobiology, and real political psychology, built one careful layer at a time as my understanding of the actual universe grew.

The faster-than-light drives are based on the real Alcubierre metric. The alien biology follows convergent evolution theory. The economics reflect genuine resource scarcity logic. The politics reflect what happens when the most powerful person in a civilization decides its institutions are preventing its survival.

When I'm not building galaxies, I'm serving in the U.S. Army in southeast Georgia, watching the Pittsburgh Penguins, and waiting on my first kid to arrive — which, depending on when you're reading this, may have already happened. My wife has the patience of a saint. The baby has no idea what universe they're being born into. Literally.

I take my coffee with the same seriousness I take FTL physics. If you hand me a bad cup, I will notice. I will say nothing. But I will notice.
